existence

i attend every wedding alone
borrowed cars and stolen home
you’re smiling at me like you know
i hope you do and i hope you don’t

the leaving of the left behind
July 16, 2007
may 1: you’re here
and you’re planning
life is full of babies
and fly fishing
trips you’re taking
may 3: your charted course
ends with a crash
and alters the courses
of the lives of the left behind
and it’s the ripple effect
illustrated in color
too massive and honest
for me to look upon
for when i do
in that instant
i am your wife
your daughter
and your mother
your best friend
and your soul mate
and it’s more than i can bear
for i know this is the foreshadowing
the brevity of life
the script
July 16, 2007
yes, it would be wordy at times
there would be a lot more talk of
beauty, wonder, and amazement
to start
but the most important piece would be
(parenthetical)
you know – the feeling you’d get even if
you tuned out all the dialogue
and the scenery
that “to the ends of the earth and back” sense
blessings heavy in the room
gratefulness apparent
relief written on faces
and she would come first
because that is where she would place
him
lips move more than they ought
May 28, 2007
it’s been said
that i’m addicted to
admiration
the chase
and the new car smell
shards and slivers
May 28, 2007
what is to become
of these two hearts
once one?
joined together
now torn apart
wide open and exposed
who will be next to you,
to me?
to cover what no other
eye was ever meant to see
arms and legs

bearing fruit
May 15, 2007
my root system has grown so
deep and intricate in this fertile soil
enriched with suffering and tears
and the empathy of others
all i know to do now
is to keep growing
and producing fruit
i never knew i could bear
these crisp fruits of love
big green peace leaves
joyful orange blossoms bursting forth and
patient, kind, petite pink blooms
content to be hidden at first glance
my trunk becoming goodness
growing under this faithful sun
and gentle breeze
all this time teaching me self control
i am thankful for the storms i have and will weather
storms that force roots
force underground growth
i touched my lips to the cheek of another
just to cool the sting you left me with
our love our love
our love: don’t you see what it do to me?
i laid out every little piece of me
on the table and labeled it:
“all yours”
i laid out every little piece of me
on the table and labeled it:
“all yours”
my love my love
my love: not enough to keep us
my love my love
my love: it’s not enough to hold us
oh, baby. i see what we have and what we could be
but baby, your love is too much for me
i’m a man who needs it simple and i like it clean
i can’t feel as much everything you feel for me
my love my love
my love: can’t ever do what you do for me
let it show
May 1, 2007
laundry pinned up in the sunshine
the green grass between my toes
it don’t get much brighter than this boy
if you love me let it show
breeze is blowing and the clouds are few
all the flowers i planted are in bloom
it don’t get much better than this boy
if you love me let it show
forget the war for just the afternoon
all the hate that plagues and threatens ruin
don’t retreat from me and the love i bring
it’s all i have and it’s what you need
we’ve got tears and laughter and what’s more
we believe there’s more than this life to die for
it don’t get much righter than this boy
i know you love me so let it show
