the leaving of the left behind

may 1: you’re here
and you’re planning
life is full of babies
and fly fishing
trips you’re taking
may 3: your charted course
ends with a crash
and alters the courses
of the lives of the left behind
and it’s the ripple effect
illustrated in color
too massive and honest
for me to look upon
for when i do
in that instant
i am your wife
your daughter
and your mother
your best friend
and your soul mate
and it’s more than i can bear
for i know this is the foreshadowing
the brevity of life
